Method 1: Using a Hex Editor

A hex editor is a tool that allows you to view and edit the raw binary data of a file. By using a hex editor, you can manipulate the bytes that store the password information in the VBA project file. Here are the steps to use this method:

  • Download and install a hex editor, such as HxD.

  • Make a backup copy of your Excel file that contains the VBA project.

  • Open your Excel file with the hex editor.

  • Search for the text DPB= (without quotes) in the hex editor. You should find it just above [Host Extender Info].

  • Change DPB= to DPx= (without quotes) and save the file.

  • Open your Excel file with Excel and click Yes if you get a warning message.

  • Open the VBA editor (Alt + F11) and click OK if you get another warning message.

  • Right-click on the VBA project name, select Properties, go to the Protection tab and delete the existing passwords as well as uncheck the Lock project for viewing checkbox.

  • Re-check the Lock project for viewing checkbox and add your own memorable password.

  • Save and close your Excel file.

Congratulations! You have successfully recovered your VBA project password in Excel 2013 using a hex editor.

Method 2: Using 7-Zip

Another way to recover a VBA project password in Excel 2013 is to use 7-Zip, a free and open source file archiver. This method works by extracting and modifying the vbaProject.bin file inside the Excel file. Here are the steps to use this method:

  • Download and install 7-Zip.

  • Make a backup copy of your Excel file that contains the VBA project.

  • Rename your Excel file extension from .xlsm to .zip.

  • Open your zip file with 7-Zip and navigate to the xl folder.

  • Extract the vbaProject.bin file from the zip file to your desktop or any other location.

  • Open the vbaProject.bin file with a hex editor (see Method 1).

  • Search for the text DPB= (without quotes) in the hex editor and change it to DPx= (without quotes).

  • Save and close the vbaProject.bin file.

  • Replace the old vbaProject.bin file in the zip file with the new modified one.

  • Rename your zip file extension back to .xlsm.

You have successfully recovered your VBA project password in Excel 2013 using 7-Z c481cea774
