How to Use Your Black Card to Travel Like a VIP

The most interesting perk of the business version of the Centurion Card is a generous 50% rebate on airfares purchased with Membership Rewards points. This gives an effective return rate of 2 cents per dollar, which is more than any other American Express card offers on unlimited spending in every category. Points earned on transactions over $5,000 are worth an effective 3% back when redeemed in this manner. This bonus does not exist on the personal version of the card.

If the Amex Business Platinum is not an option for you, some of the Amex Black Card benefits are also available on the Amex Platinum for a much lower fee of $695. (Terms apply. See rates and fees.) Like the Business Platinum, the personal card earns 5 Membership Rewards Points per dollar for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel on up to $500,000 per calendar year, 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel and 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases. Unlike the Business Platinum card, it lacks the airfare points rebate, which could add up for those who use it strategically.

However, there are some steps you can take to get an invitation for black card membership. For example, past media reports have suggested that you can get an invitation to apply for a black credit card from American Express once you spend an average of $500,000 annually on another American Express credit card.

Other black credit cards, including options from Chase, may only be available to select banking clients who have a high dollar amount on deposit or invested with the bank. Once again, however, no one knows for sure the internal dollar figure required by card issuers for a formal invitation to black card status.

Ultimately it's the narrator's war with himself that's the most dramatic conflict in Black Card. "I wanted to recognize myself," he says. "I wish I was awesomer. I wish I was blacker. I wish I could just settle into something and be it." He calls punk "a quick fix, but life wasn't that quick." He says of hip hop, "I love [it] because it's courage and bluster in the face of a world it can't control." But the divide within his soul is more than personal. As Terry so cleverly and poignantly points out, the narrator's split personality embodies the soul of America itself. And with deadpan comic timing, sensitive insight, and taut, terse prose, Terry plunges the reader into his turmoil. Like nature, racial identity in America abhors a vacuum. If you don't fill in your own identity, as Black Card illustrates, someone else will. Striking a superb balance between levity and heaviness, Terry crafts an enormously fun read about a decidedly less than fun topic.

Fenty Beauty Black Card Flypencil Longwear Eyeliner ($22.00 for 0.01 oz.) is a deep black with neutral-to-cool undertones and flecks of silver sparkle throughout. It had semi-sheer color payoff when applied initially, and it was buildable to nearly opaque coverage with two to three layers.

So you can imagine how much street cred Seinfeld is implying by saying he's basically the reason the card was invented, especially because sources contradict each other on the topic of the Black Card's conception... but we'll come back to that in a moment.

So we did a bit of digging. Our first goal was to clear up exactly what year the Black Card came out. Wikipedia claims the card debuted in 1991, while Snopes says it was 1999. Seinfeld began as a spokesperson for Amex in 1995, so depending on which version is correct, this single detail could completely invalidate his claim. Because if the Black Card was created in 1991, there's no way that Seinfeld was on the set of an American Express ad before even being an Amex testimonial. On the other hand, 1999 would fall right in line with the timeline of Seinfeld's story.

We reached out to Amex to reconcile the year, and the issuer confirmed that the card was launched in 1999, meaning it is in fact possible that Seinfeld was a component of its conception (and yet another reason not to trust Wikipedia).

This explanation is careful not to point to Seinfeld as the sole reason that the card was developed... yet it also doesn't rule him out as being a vital influencer in the development of the sought-after card.

But here's the thing: creating a credit card isn't an impulse decision. It takes time and resources to determine and work through what a card entails as far as requirements and benefits. It can take months or even years to negotiate the perks of a card, and this specific card is unarguably the most extensive one that Amex offers (the word "offers" is used lightly).

As essentially the face of Amex at the time, Jerry Seinfeld was likely one of many high-earning Amex clients interested in getting an exclusive, brag-worthy card, all of whom influenced American Express' decision to bring the card to life. We may never know how great of a bearing he personally held over Amex to make it happen, but one more vital piece of information is still unconfirmed: Was Seinfeld in fact the very first Centurion cardholder? TPG has reached out to American Express, and the company said it cannot comment "due to privacy reasons."
