Star Trek: Voyager - Season 1 Episode 1 Review
Star Trek: Voyager is a science fiction television series that follows the adventures of the USS Voyager, a Starfleet ship that is stranded in the Delta Quadrant, 75,000 light-years from Earth. The crew must find a way to cooperate with a group of Maquis rebels who were also transported to the Delta Quadrant by a powerful alien entity known as the Caretaker.
The first episode of the series, titled "Caretaker", is a two-part pilot that introduces the main characters and sets up the premise of the show. The episode was written by series creators Rick Berman, Michael Piller and Jeri Taylor, and directed by Winrich Kolbe. It originally aired on January 16, 1995 on UPN.
In this episode, we meet Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), a Starfleet officer who is assigned to track down a Maquis ship that has disappeared in the Badlands, a region of space plagued by plasma storms. She recruits Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), a former Starfleet pilot who was imprisoned for joining the Maquis, to serve as her observer. She also brings along her Vulcan security officer Tuvok (Tim Russ), who is revealed to be an undercover agent infiltrating the Maquis.
Meanwhile, on the Maquis ship, we meet Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran), a former Starfleet officer who became a rebel leader after his home planet was ceded to the Cardassians. He is accompanied by his engineer B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson), a half-human half-Klingon who struggles with her identity, and his pilot Harry Kim (Garrett Wang), a young Starfleet ensign who was captured on his first assignment.
Both ships are suddenly pulled into a massive array by a mysterious force. They discover that they are in the Delta Quadrant, far from home. They also encounter an alien race called the Ocampa, who live in an underground city and are protected by the Caretaker, an ancient being who is dying and looking for a compatible mate to continue his legacy. The Caretaker has been abducting ships from various quadrants and experimenting on their crews, hoping to find a suitable replacement.
The episode features several action sequences, such as a space battle between Voyager and a hostile alien ship called the Kazon-Ogla, and a ground assault on the Caretaker's array by Chakotay's team. It also explores the themes of survival, cooperation and sacrifice, as Janeway and Chakotay have to make difficult decisions that will affect their crews and their chances of returning home.
The episode received generally positive reviews from critics and fans alike. It was praised for its production values, its cast and its premise. It was also nominated for seven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. It is widely regarded as one of the best pilot episodes in Star Trek history.
